Snow obsession to the 25th power

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

We thought Leila was obsessed with snow before we took her to see snow. Now, everyday we are asked, “Is there snow outside?” “Did the snow get in the back yard?” “Is it snowing?” “Is it going to snow?”

We live in San Francisco, so the answer is always no. However, this morning, I felt a bit impish, so I said yes. You should have seen the look on her face. It was a look of mystified awe, with a hint of shock and horror. I quickly had to reassure her that I was joking. Still, she peered out of the window, searching for flakes, not too confident that there was indeed no snow.

I hope that it doesn’t actually snow here one day, or we will most definitely have to move.

Winter Wonderland

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

After hearing Leila talk about snow for the last six months or so, we finally decided to take the family to see some snow. We bought and borrowed snow clothes for Leila and Nina, and packed up all of our necessary gear. We packed up all the food we would need for a thirty-six hour trip—we can’t eat out due to Nina’s allergy trinity. We stocked the car with water and blankets, in case we might get stuck on the road, in a blizzard. I went out and bought two pairs of chains, since our car has all wheel drive. And Carrie made lunches for all of us for the car ride up to Donner Lake.

So off we went on Sunday morning, over the Oakland Bay and the Carquinas bridges, on I-80 east, through Sacramento to the Sierras. When we got to the snow, it was early afternoon, so we got off I-80 at the Norden exit—the way to Sugar Bowl—which used to be our default place to go back in the pre-kids days. I went into the rental shop, to get a sled and some information about where to go to use it. When I came back out, Leila was a mess of tears, snot and drool. She was terrified by the snow flakes that came into the car when her door was opened. Scratch the sledding in the winter wonderland idea. We went straight to check-in to our hotel, a few miles down the road, at Donner Lake.

Leila proceeded to relive the traumatizing snow attack of 2008, sobbing uncontrollably, until we finally got into our hotel suite, about an hour later. I had to carry her from the car to the suite, with my jacket over her head, to protect her from the falling snow. Carrie and I were thinking: In some cases your child will recoil in horror at the things that regular kids run towards with excitement.

Here are some pictures of the scenery around Donner Lake, our winter wonderland:

We did manage to get the girls on the sled for about 5 minutes, late on Sunday afternoon. Nina, in the pink space suit, sort of enjoyed it. Leila, in the back, liked the sled but not its proximity to the snow.

The area around Donner Lake is really pretty and I recommend considering it as an alternative to Lake Tahoe.

The Voice of Pablo

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

I just got off the phone with Leila. I had to pretend to be “Pablo”, one of the Backyardigans. She gets to call a Backyardigans friend when she goes on the potty. So far this is working better than chocolate, lollipops, TV, and gifts. We’re trying to refrain from using threats, since that would probably come back to haunt us later when we have to pay for her therapy sessions.

I did a pretty terrible impersonation, but she’s a believer. Now I’ll have to practice doing the voices of all the other Backyardigans: Tasha, Tyrone, Uniqua, and Austin.

North Shore of San Francisco at Dusk

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

I pass this spot in Fort Mason on my ride home from work, which has a really great view of the northern shore of San Francisco. I makes for a great long time exposure shot, at dusk, once the sun has dipped below the horizon. I propped my camera up on a rock, and set the shutter speed to 10 seconds with a small aperture — I think it was on 22. The resulting photograph has a warm glow feel to it.

What bridge is that over there?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

I was riding in late to work, and as I passed the pier at the top end of Van Ness. I thought since I was already late, I’d go to the end of it to take a panorama of the marina and Ghirardelli square. There was one other guy on his bike taking pictures with his camera phone when I got there. As I set up to take my shots, the guy asked me, “Excuse, me. Do you know what bridge that is over there?” pointing at the Golden Gate Bridge. I politely told him the name of the bridge, and took my shots. He then asked me how to get to the bridge. I told him.

After living in San Francisco for the past nine years, there are certain thing you begin to take for granted, especially how beautiful this regions is. You also assume that such landmarks as the Golden Gate Bridge are known and recognizable by all. Interacting with the other guy on his bike, this morning, makes me wonder how much of this other guy’s world is foreign to me. What great landmarks does he take for granted, that I’ve never know existed?

You can see full sized version of the panorama I took from the pier by clicking the small one below.

And, yes, that red-orange bridge in the far right side of the photo is the Golden Gate Bridge.

What I see at work

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Last August, my company consolidated their San Francisco offices into one location. The one location is at the top right corner of San Francisco, across the street from the famous tourist spot, Pier 39. This move did limit the options for lunch, only offering up things like the Hard Rock Cafe, or Johnny Rockets, but the views are much nicer than those of the old office.

Using a Nikon D40x, I took continuous shots from the balcony of the third floor of my building, then spliced them together with Photoshop. Click on the small version of the image below to view the full size one.

Un ciel démonté

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Today, the sky is preparing to fall. We are expecting a trio of “high intensity” storms over the next few days. This apparently translates into some good looking skies.
