Raised Bed

Friday, June 19th, 2009

I’ve been reading The Self-Sufficiency Hanbook: A Complete Guide to Greener Living by Bridgewater and Bridgewater. It’s not so much a book to read end to end — although you can certainly do so — as it is a reference guide for daily life, or daily dreaming about a better way of life. It’s a great book for anyone interested in living greener. There is tons of information about how to plant and manage your edible garden, from how  to prepare the soil to harvesting and storing what it produces. There’s even a comprehensive section on preserving food for your pantry. It even goes into how to make your own soap and candles.

So with a green thumb in mind, I set out to build a planter for the back yard to make a raised bed box planter. I took my number one helper with me. She measured the wood and helped me drill all the holes and drive in all the screws. She had a blast and so did I, all while number two was taking a nap.

Next, I’ll have to find some manure to put in the bottom of the of the raised bed box planter, below the ground level, which will be covered by soil. To that, I’ll add some earth worms. Then I can begin planting.

More to come…

Cotton Ball Sky

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

The sky is in rare form over San Francisco this evening. It’s speckled with little puffy clouds, which is an uncommon, but welcomed site.

Eating out, our style

The weather was nice, this Saturday, so we ate dinner in the back yard. As expected, we’re all sporting our San Francisco summer wear.

Preparing for emergencies

Friday, June 5th, 2009

We have heard and read stories about little kids saving their parents by calling 9-1-1. So we thought our oldest, who is 4 and a half, is old enough to be taught how to dial for emergency services, since she knows her numbers.

We explained to her that if something happens to one us and we can’t talk to her, she needs to get the phone and dial 9-1-1, and ask for help.

The first thing we realized is that we couldn’t find the phone. Note to self, always put the phone back on it’s base.

Next, with the phone in hand, we told our oldest to dial 9, then 1, then another 1. So she dialed 9, then 1, and then she paused, looked at us, looked at the phone and back at us again and said, with a worried look, “I can’t find the other 1.”

After a good laugh, we realized we should cross our fingers and hope we don’t have any emergencies.

in some cases you may find yourself with a dolphin at dinner

Cali girls eating quinoa, tofu, kale chips and sweet potatoes.  Someone needed to eat dinner as “nessie the dolphin”.  Don’t ask.

btw, do you like our first “mama and papa try to sew something” project?
